About us

Forge Shotokan was Established in 1983 by Stuart Hughes. Over the years, Forge has had many homes, it's current dojo is located at Stoke Prior Village Hall in Bromsgrove, with larger classes and courses taking place at Aston Fields Middle School in Bromsgrove.

With over 40 years of karate experience, Sensei Hughes has trained with, and graded under, many top instructors, and the club has produced regional champions. A core number of high graded students currently make up the senior class, with kyu grades and beginners also welcome at all classes.

Forge welcomes students from all Shotokan groups to come and train, and actively encourage other styles to come and train to gain mutual understanding and learning opportunities.

Tsukada Sensei Course 15/09/2024

We were very happy to again be able to assist with hosting Tsukada Sensei (9th Dan, Shito Ryu) on 15/09/2024 at our Aston Fields Dojo.

3 hours of training covering kata bunkai behind Heian/Pinan Yondan and Godan was insightful, detailed and inspired. It is always a pleasure to train with Tsukada Sensei, who has lots of time to answer questions and is an excellent communicator of ideas, both physically and orally. We hope to be able to assist in hosting for Sensei again in the future.

Training Details

Standard Training

We train once a week, on Sundays at 6pm until roughly 8pm.

All grades, standards and associations are welcome to come and train, either let us know in advance or just turn up. Feel free to come and watch if you would like to, we are very open.

We have a core group of experienced Dan grades as well as Kyu grades and welcome all beginners, whether they have martial arts training or not.

Please note that the minimum age for starting at Forge Shotokan is 8 years old.

If you want to get into Karate and are unsure of whether is it for you, please get in touch, we're very honest and respectful. We can approach things at whatever pace you wish.

Our Next Special Course is a Mixed Styles Traditional Karate Course with Instructors Glyn Jones (7th Dan Goju Ryu), Calvin Collins (6th Dan Sankukai) and Forge Shotokan Chief Instructor Stuart Hughes (7th Dan, Shotokan).

Taking Place at Our Aston Fields Dojo on 20/10/2024 @ 10:30am - 2pm. £15 for over 3 hours training.
